Two teams who had nothing to play for came together in the last round of the regular season, and it was Melbourne who closed their season with a victory.

The Demons won by virtue of a six goal to one blast with use of the wind in the opening term. Collingwood might have taken the lead back at half time, but they were woefully inaccurate and kicked 5.7 in the second term. It wasn't all their poor kicking, the determined defence led by Beames pushed them to have their shots from difficult positions. The lead shrunk at the end of the quarter when the Pies kicked three goals in a row to reduce the gap to four.

Despite Fanning missing a shot at the end of the third quarter, Melbourne extended their lead to 21 at the last chance. Fanning made amends with the first goal of the last quarter, and only a three goal comeback by the visitors when the game was already lost help keep the margin respectable.

Collingwood's loss dropped them into last place amongst teams who had played the full season, but the wooden spoon had already been won by St Kilda who were excluded from the second part of the season after being last after Round 11.

Best were D. Cordner, Beames and Fanning. Shadbolt was unused 19th man.
