Melbourne win by 62 points

Goalkickers: Eric Glass 6, Les Jones 3, Ron Baggott 1, Maurie Gibb 1, Lou Reiffel 1, Norm Smith 1, Ray Wartman 1

Despite a recent run of good form, North's young side was no match for the polished Melbourne outfit, who racked up their biggest win of the year. Conditions were tricky, with wind and intermittent showers making footing treacherous and the ball greasy but Melbourne mastered the weather to remain on track to play finals.

Courtesy of strong ruck work, the Shinboners led early, but shocking kicking with the wind wrecked their chance of building up a lead. They booted 2.6 to 2.0 in the opening term, but from there on it was a Melbourne procession. North held firm at the start of the second term, before their defence was overpowered. Two of Eric Glass' six goals (he also kicked five behinds) in the middle of the quarter helped build a lead, and by the break he had five of Melbourne's eight. They led by 19 points.

North had their chance with the wind in the third quarter but Melbourne's defence held firm, creating opportunities for them at the other end. The visitors had made no headway into the half-time score before Glass got his sixth with the last kick of the quarter, extending the gap to 26 points.

Favoured by the breeze, Melbourne romped home. They were dominant but inaccurate in the final term, 23 shots at goal generating just 4.13. North's only reply was a solitary behind.

Melbourne's chances of making the finals were improved by fifth placed Richmond suffering a surprise loss to Hawthorn. It left both Carlton and Melbourne only needing to win one of their remaining two games to ensure a place in the finals.

At the end of the match field umpire Blackburn reported North player Adamson for having "endeavoured to ridicule the field umpire by passing remarks on decisions".

Best were Eric Glass, John Lewis and Jack Mueller. Furniss replaced Taylor (injured leg) in the first quarter.
