Melbourne's hopes of finals football were crushed by their second consecutive loss by under a goal. Carlton had come out on top by five points a week earlier, and now Fitzroy all but ended their outside chances of playing finals.

The visitors got the first two goals, with Melbourne unsuccessfully trying to attack via the wing until Joolen broke through with the Redlegs' first late in the term. Maguire leveled scores early in the second, and two goals from Politz opened a handy break but Fitzroy hit back with late goals to take a seven point lead at the half. The sides battled hard in the third term, with Melbourne cutting a goal off the lead before the last break.

Neither team goalled in the last quarter, with the ball going from end to end but only generating a pair of behinds each. Melbourne had a shot at goal with the last kick of the day but narrowly missed scoring the behind that would have salvaged a draw. Harry Brereton and Fitzroy's Freake were in a neck-and-neck race for top goalscorer in the league but managed just one apiece.

Winger McKenzie was Melbourne's standout player despite suffering a heavy knock early in the match. Alf George also suffered a broken jaw but played the next week.

It was Melbourne's first one point loss since Round 6, 1902. It left them two games outside the four with three games to play.
