The Demons snapped an eight game losing streak in their second consecutive 16th vs 17th on the ladder match - but they didn't do it easily. After conceding the first goal of the match in the first minute the Demons then dominated most of the quarter with little reward.
Playing with a sense of freedom under Neil Craig the Demons broke away in the second quarter, and further extended their lead going into the last.
The Bulldogs kicked the first two goals of the final quarter, but when Melbourne responded with the next three it seemed they were safe. It was then, 15 minutes into the final term and more than 40 points down that their opponents launched a blistering comeback.
With 90 seconds left the margin was back under a goal - and the Bulldogs went forward again only for best on ground Jack Watts to become the saviour at the other end of the ground with a match-saving grab. Melbourne managed to play out the game, and they narrowly avoided suffering a shattering comeback reminiscent of Round 6, 1992
Best were Watts, Terlich and Frawley. Craig's first victory as coach made him the oldest man ever to coach Melbourne to a win.
Shannon Byrnes replaced Sam Blease in the third quarter when Blease suffered an ankle injury.
