A surprise win at Geelong a week earlier put Melbourne well and truly in the running for top spot - and against a Fitzroy side who hadn't won at the MCG since 1924 they didn't have any trouble collecting another victory. They were hardly convincing but they got the points.

The game was all but over by quarter time as the home team opened up a lead of 29 points. Fitzroy's forwards had fumbled and missed opportunities but improved in the second quarter where they played with more vigour. The visitors stayed with them for the rest of the game and avoid being blown out of the water.

It was Melbourne's highest score of the season to date, and only resolute play Fitzroy's defenders stopped the score and margin from being even higher. Wittman, Taylor and Warne-Smith were Melbourne's best.

The Redlegs remained second on percentage behind Collingwood, but had opened up a two game lead on third placed Richmond - who they would play the next week. Their finals spot was now sewn up, but they had to keep battling to try and finish in the top two and win a double chance.
