Melbourne win by 6 points

Goalkickers: Frank Langley 1, Fred McGinis 1, Jim McLean 1, Les Rippon 1

Milestones:

Two teams battling for one of the last spots in the top four came together in a low scoring game, and Melbourne took opportunities better to narrowly win and give themselves the advantage in the race. Harry Parkin captained the Reds in the absence of Bill McClelland and opened his account with a win.

Fitzroy were dominant in the goalless first quarter, and cost themselves badly by missing five shots on the goal. Langley got Melbourne's first goal in the second quarter and by half time his side had three to nil. The Roys kept Melbourne goalless in the third and missed even more chances.

Despite their poor kicking for goal the visitors finally got their noses in front early in the last quarter. With six minutes to go they were a point in front before Fred McGinis marked and goaled to hand his side victory.

McGinis, Moodie and Cumberland were best.
