With their run at the finals having been dented by a loss at Moorabbin a week before, the Demons hosted Hawthorn looking to reinvigorate their chances of featuring in September and at half-time it looked like they were going to run away to an easy win.

Instead of grilling his players at the long break, Hawk coach John Kennedy shuffled his players and saw 36 points wiped off the lead in the third quarter. They comeback started with a goal six minutes into the last quarter, and 12 more scoring shots followed before the last change.

Melbourne regained composure and held their lead throughout the final term until the 27 minute mark with Gerald McCarthy put Hawthorn a point up. When Leigh Matthews goalled three minutes later the match was over.

Best were Hardeman, Bourke and Flower. Fitzsimmons and Leary were replaced by Rollinson and Davis respectively during the last quarter.
