On a soggy Kardinia Park, the pacy Cats beat their high marking opponents easily, furthering their claims for another premiership. Had the home side been more accurate in their kicking they would have racked up a massive score.
Geelong had gone back to the top of the ladder the week before in front of a record crowd, and while 10,000 less turned up to see them against the Demons they still saw a dominant performance which all but ended any hopes Melbourne had of playing finals.
Melbourne kicked the first goal through Ken Albiston but from then they were second best and offered token resistance. With their two half-back flankers already missing Melbourne had to field a clearly unfit Lance Arnold at full-back and the depleted defence was left at the mercy of Geelong's quick attack. The locals quickly cancelled out the opening goal and kicked the last three of the first term.
A new ball was used in the second quarter due to the original becoming waterlogged, and again Melbourne opened well with the first goal of the term before Geelong took over. The Demons attempted to close the game up and attack through the centre but Geelong's half-back line constantly turned defence into attack. With rain falling again late in the quarter the locals kicked the last goal to give themselves a match-winning 22 point lead.
For the third time the visitors kicked the opening goal of the quarter and briefly threatened before being failing to land another one for the term. Geelong took over but kicked inaccurately and their dominance only gained them 3.9. They improved to 5.5 in the last quarter to run out easy winners.
Best were McGivern, McKenzie and Cordner. Johnson replaced Arnold (leg injury) in the third quarter and Lehmann replaced Albiston (ankle) in the last quarter.
Geelong were the only team in the league to score over a hundred points that afternoon. The next closest was Fitzroy on 76. Melbourne's score was the highest of any losing team on the day despite their terrible performance.
