After keeping their thin hopes of making the top four alive with a win over Essendon a week earlier the Reds welcomed sixth placed Geelong, recently inside the four themselves, and earned another important win.

Melbourne were considered a chance to beat the free falling Pivotonians but the ease of their victory was a surprise, five goals up at half time before playing out a nearly even second half. Geelong's forwards had been terrible against Melbourne's defence early, and the last two goals of the first quarter opened up a 25 point lead which effectively won them the game.

Geelong had the win in the second quarter, but their poor forward play only delivered 1.3, while Melbourne booted three goals. The visitors altered their side in the third quarter but again were unable to get past Jack Mueller in the Demon defence, and Melbourne got the only goal of the term.

With the game already won many left the ground, and they missed Geelong doubling their goal tally. They never got close enough to challenge and Melbourne regained control of the game by the final bell to run out comfortable victors.

Their chances of making the finals were still almost non-existent because of a tough run home but the victory all but ruined Geelong's hopes of playing in September.

Best were Mueller, La Fontaine and Deague.
