The Redlegs all but booked their spot in the finals, and put themselves in contention for top place, with a runaway win against fellow top four contenders Carlton.
On a heavy ground the match was a contest for three quarters, and even despite the muddy conditions the two sides played the match with bursts speed not befitting the weather.
With little to split the two sides early on it was Melbourne's aerial superiority and a slight advantage of the breeze which set up a two goal lead at the first change. Carlton kicked the first two goals of the match, but then Melbourne steadied and booted four in a row. They were denied another goal by a contentious umpiring decision.
The two sides traded blows in a high standard second quarter which saw Carlton sneak closer before Harry Moyes kicked a goal in the dying seconds to restore a nine point lead, before a hard fought third quarter where there was no score for more than 15 minutes left the sides separated by 11 points at the last break.
The struggle of the first three quarters had exhausted the visitors, and with steam running out rapidly Melbourne were able to run away with the win. Two goals in a row at the start of the term opened up a winning lead before Carlton struck back. Any chance the Blues had of winning was then blocked by Melbourne's defence who denied them a goal on the line.
Best was Dunbar, who played what was described as the game of his career, Mollison and Warne-Smith.
