For the second year in a row, the Reds were thrashed after returning from a mid-season tour of Tasmania. The result may have been even worse if not for a stiff wind that blew across the ground, confining much of the play to a wing. With the best of the wind, Melbourne kept the Maroons goalless in the opening term but only registered one of their own. Fitzroy took over after the first change, using the wind to boot four goals to no score.

In a week where a smallpox scare had swept across Melbourne, leading to the suggestion that matches might have to be postponed to give players time to recover from the effects of a vaccine against the disease, the visiting side played like they were ill and registered the lowest score of the day. Seven goals down starting the last quarter, Melbourne got the first goal but were easily beaten from there.

Best were Robertson, Monk and Lugton. Politz strained an ankle in the second quarter and had to play forward.
