Lowest score at Moorabbin

After his side had kicked themselves out of the game with 9.21 a week earlier, Norm Smith drilled his forwards on their goalkicking during the week but Demons' first game at Moorabbin Oval couldn't have been any less conducive to sparkling forward play. Their visit was a sign of things to come over the next thirty years at the Saints new home, with the ground covered in pools of water and an icy rain pounding down throughout.

Despite the abysmal conditions Saints champion Darrel Baldock dominated, and Melbourne had no answer for him. The conditions were so terrible that even the four St Kilda players who had dared start the game wearing short sleeve jerseys came out after half-time with long sleeves. Some Melbourne players even wore a short sleeve jumper over a long sleeved one just to get some extra warmth in the arctic conditions. It wasn't just the players who did some serious thinking at half time, much of the crowd headed for shelter at the long break and did not return for the third quarter.

The Demons took a slender lead into quarter time, but by the time the two sides went into the sheds for some welcome relief from the conditions they were 20 points down and the Saints never looked back. Melbourne chipped a goal off the lead in the third term, but when they failed to score in the last St. Kilda needed just four goals to run out comfortable 43 point winners.

Best were Johnson, Leahy and Emselle. Rattray was replaced by Hirst and Leahy by Osborne, both in the last quarter.

The loss dropped the Demons to 2-10, still sitting above the bottom of the ladder only by virtue of Fitzroy having gone without a win all year.

Melbourne's lowest ever score at the ground.
