Melbourne's chances of playing in the finals had been dealt a significant blow the previous Saturday, leaving them three games outside the four - but whatever slim chances they had of appearing in the finals were kept alive in a narrow win over the Tigers.

The Reds were lucky not to kick themselves out of the match, having 11 more scoring shots but only winning by a goal after kicking seven goals to two in the final term. Richmond were unlucky to lose and not have the chance to take top spot on the ladder despite having kicked one more goal.

With his side in deep trouble, Melbourne captain Colin Niven moved players into defence, grinding the Tiger attack to a halt and allowing his side to stage a great comeback.

It was the first century score against Richmond all year - and Melbourne's best against the Tigers since 1927.

Best was Niven. La Fontaine was treated for a bruised leg. 19th man was Bennett.
