Having dropped out of the four with a loss a week earlier Melbourne needed to get back into winning form, and yet another tight game saw them do it against the Seasiders.

In a high quality game there was controversy before the bounce as Bannister from St Kilda demanded money from their committee before he'd take the field and as such he was left out of the team.

Melbourne started the game with a slight wind advantage and used it well by kicking straight. They conceded the first goal but consecutive majors to Harker, Chadwick, House and Haines gave them the leader before the visitors got a late goal to stay in touch.

Melbourne got the first in the opening minute of the second quarter, but five goals in a row to St Kilda gave them a 14 point lead at the long break. The wind then died down in the third quarter, evening the game up and allowing Melbourne to cut the margin to one goal at the last change.

St Kilda opened up an early two goal gap, but following the example set by Wilson and Haines the Redlegs players willed themselves over the line. They extended the lead over a goal when Haines scored the 12th for the day, but St Kilda kept themselves in it with a goal of their own before Elliman scored the sealer.

Best were Thomas, Allen and Haines.
