The red and blue run to the finals continued apace with yet another unexpected victory over a fellow contender. They hadn't beaten the Maroons since Round 1, 1911, but on a perfect day for football led at every change of the match of the day and strengthened their grip on third place.

Fitzroy kicked the first goal after 25 seconds but the home side struck back courtesy of their strong ruck department and booted two goals of their own within the first four minutes. The game settled from there, but with superior pace Melbourne led all day, weathering a comeback by the visitors early in the third quarter to win despite Fitzroy receiving 58 free kicks to 42.

The lead extended to five goals in the last quarter before a belated comeback from Fitzroy - whose forwards finally began to fire - and three late goals, including one after the bell, made the score more respectable.

Lilley, Walker and Doubleday were Melbourne's best defenders, while the two McKenzies and the debuting Gibb were prominent in the midfield. The forwards worked well as a team and Brereton and Park were both dominant.
