With each side down two players courtesy of the Victorian side playing in South Australia on the same day, Melbourne started the second half of the year by eventually running away to an easy win. The Demons were missing Robert B Johnson and Peter Marquis, while North were without Aylett and Doolan but the home team performed better for three quarters before running out of gas.

A faster North were strong in the first quarter, with 10 scoring shots, and even when the lumbering Demons had their chance with the breeze in the second they conceded the first goal. The dash shown by the Roos until then started to fade, and two late Ron Barassi goals gave Melbourne the lead.

North used the wind to build a 13 point lead at three quarter time, but the breeze helped Melbourne storm home. They had to rely on Lord to turn away two early North attacks before the Roos lost their spirit and were overrun. The sides traded goals in the middle of the term before a double from Case gave his side the lead, and they didn't look back. North slowed to a walk and what was eventually a comfortable victory saw Melbourne's highest score at Arden Street in 15 years.

The victory, and a shock loss by Hawthorn against St Kilda lifted the Demons back to the top of the league ladder.

Best were Brian Dixon, Trevor Johnson and Col Wilson. Adams (flu) was replaced by Thorogood in the selected side. Barassi and Ridley were replaced by Pinfold and Crameri respectively in the last quarter due to cramp.
