Melbourne's sixth win in seven starts firmly established them as top four contenders. The match had been postponed from the previous week due to heavy rain ruining grounds across the league, and Melbourne showed no signs of being affected by the surprise week's break.

Essendon remained in contention until the last quarter but could never get close enough to the Demons to cause them any nervous moments.

La Fontaine was best.

Charlie Longhurst was suspended for eight matches for kicking Essendon's Bryce, however the verdict was not handed down later due to Longhurst being able to attend due to two broken ribs and concussion which he suffered during the match. He was eventually suspended a week later and never played VFL football again.

John Lewis and Joe Kinnear were found not guilty of striking and elbowing respectively.
