A week after their greatest ever win the Redlegs faced a much sterner task in travelling to fellows finals contenders Geelong. They put up a brave performance, but for the second week in a row the side who won would have done so by more if they'd kicked straight.

On an ideal winter's day, with no rain or wind, Melbourne's start was bright, but they couldn't sustain the momentum. Duff got the first goal with a drop kick less than two minutes in, and Johnson followed up with another off the ground not long after but from there Geelong settled and were the better side for the rest of the term.

Once Geelong got started they quickly took the lead, and in a second quarter marred by mistakes over-passing by foot cost Melbourne, but Geelong's failures in kicking for goal balanced the ledger. The game improved in the third quarter, but it was only three straight goals Melbourne to 1.6 which kept the match open going into the last quarter. Geelong's goal came first, and Melbourne were forced to rely on Abernethy to save them in defence three times before they goalled through Warne-Smith.

After the trifecta of Melbourne goals Geelong remained in control for the rest of the quarter but couldn't added another major. In the last quarter the game became a scramble, and Melbourne looked to have taken the lead through Moyes but the goal umpire paid the ball having touched the post.

Warne-Smith, Abernethy and White were Melbourne's best. Streeter also won praise for holding Geelong's Hagger goalless for the first time since 1924,
