The second half of the season began as the first had for Melbourne, with a loss against the Maroons. They were not disgraced though, putting in a solid performance in the second half against the defending premiers - one which would have seen them win against many of the lesser sides of the competition.

Starting the third quarter almost eight goals behind the Reds outscored their visitors by 6.5 to 2.4. Arthur Best could have been better for his side, bagging only one goal from numerous opportunties.

Jack Baquie made his return to Melbourne after having spent four seasons with Carlton but his homecoming was ruined by having to leave the match after being accidentally kicked in the head during the third quarter.

The win lifted Fitzroy back to the top of the table while Melbourne sat only in front of University.

Len Incigneri was Melbourne's best.
