Originally signed by Richmond after leading the Bendigo league goalkicking as a 16-year-old, their hold on him expired on 1956 and he turned down Carlton to join Melbourne. He returned to the country after after suffering concussion while playing as a follower in a practice match.

In 1960 he joined St Kilda, with a reputation as one of the most versatile players in the league.

Captain/coached Frankston in their first two VFA seasons in 1966 and 1967.
