The full-forward booted seven goals in a practice game during the 1955 pre-season, but just when officials thought they had a new goalkicker he chose to return to Old Scotch. Nevertheless he was assigned number 27 that season and trained at times with the senior side during the year.

Hawthorne returned for 1956 pre-season training and announced that he was available but missed time on National Service and never played a senior match.

Moved to Kerang in 1958.
