Bencraft represented the Victorian schoolboys at the 1939 Hobart junior carnival, and captained the Sandringham Colts from 1940 to 1943 before being recruited to Melbourne in 1944 as a rover.

He played two games before returning to Sandringham where he won the 1945 Best and Fairest. The next year he was runner-up in the Liston Trophy and kicked the winning goal in that year's preliminary final. He played a total of 141 senior matches for the Zebras until 1952, when he moved to Mentone.

Returning to Sandringham for a third time in 1956 he captain/coached the reserves for two seasons before taking over as senior coach from 1958-1962. Sandy finished runners up in 1960 and won the 1962 premiership. He coached the Sandy thirds from 1971 to 1973 before returning as senior coach for the 1974 season. He then went back to coaching the thirds - where he won five flags in total.

Bencraft was selected as a forward pocket/change rover in the Sandringham team of the century. He also coached Moorabbin, and in both Queensland and South Australia. The Sandringham Best and Fairest award is named after him.
