On Queen's Birthday, the local side attacked first and scored the opening goal. The Demons - who only had 11 of their best 20 playing - replied, but conceded the lead by half time and were thrashed after the break.

At the end of the game Melbourne players were pelted with stones by sections of the Ballarat crowd.
