May 1874 match vs North Melbourne

Saturday 30 May - Melbourne Ground

Melbourne 1
North Melbourne 0 (half time 1-0)

Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkicker: Andrew Loughnan

In their first game for the season Melbourne played two short for the first half an hour, after delaying the game for 30 minutes to try and get their side together, but despite their handicap they spent the entire day attacking. Melbourne's 19th showed up half an hour into the game.

North held firm and only conceded one goal for the day, but were lucky that the slippery conditions stopped Melbourne scoring more. Loughnan kicked the only goal of the day, and immediately from the kick-off North had their only decent chance at a major all day. A kick from 40 yards missed, and soon after half time was called.

Melbourne continued to hammer away at the goal of the visitors but were not able to score again. Austin Loughnan had a late attempt on goal disallowed because the umpire had already called time.

Best were Bell, Bennie and Cumming.
