Invited to train with the seniors in July 1947 after strong performances in the Seconds, Spittle soon made his senior debut.

A pacy wingman who had his best season in 1948, playing 22 games and winning a premiership.

Spittle was dropped from Melbourne's list in the 1951 pre-season. He joined Ballarat League side Redan in 1952 where he remained through 1953
