Lyons was hailed as the VFA recruit of the year after his one season with Sandringham, but that was all the Zebras got out of him as his impressive performances led to him being recruited to the Demons. He had also been sought by St KIlda. Lyons' first league season was only his second of senior football, he had joined Sandy directly from the Beaumaris Under 17s.

After kicking four goals on debut and playing the first 19 games of his debut season Lyons was voted Best First Year Player, but despite playing the first two games of the next year he struggled to hold his spot over the next two years and was cleared back to Sandringham midway through 1977.

He returned just in time to play in that year's Grand Final and appeared in 141 games for the Zebras until 1986. Played in a reserves premiership in 1982, and a senior flag in 1985.

In 1986 he was appointed captain of the senior side and coached the reserves in the same year before retiring midway through the season after the deaths of his mother and brother in quick succession. He returned as reserves coach in 1988.

Lyons' son Jarryd debuted for Adelaide in 2012, and another son Corey was drafted by Brisbane in 2016.
