The captain of the 1998 Tasmanian Under 18 representative side missed the first half of that season after suffering viral meningitis but was given an opportunity by Melbourne for his strong overhead marking and ability to kick on both sides of his body.

Speers played five senior games for Sandringham in 2000 but missed out on their premiership that year and didn't play in the AFL. He was delisted at the end of the year. Later became a fashion model.
