Melbourne chased the rover for four years and eventually signed him in 1956 after kicking six goals in a practice match but he returned to the country to play another season with Kyabram. A number of league secretaries had been after him as a junior when he captained the Victorian schoolboy team. He reappeared in practice matches in 1957 but still did not stay with the club permanently.

Dropped from the senior list in the 1958 pre-season.
