Selected for the first two rounds of 1962, Rattray was unable to play because his clearance papers from Tasmania were missing. He had to be withdrawn from the selected side both times, before finally making his first senior start in Round 3.

After four games in his debut season, Rattray was cut from the senior list in May 1963. He found his way back into the side late in the year and played the last six matches of the season - including two finals. He didn't play any games in 1964 after injuring his knee in a pre-season game, and a broken jaw suffered in his Round 2, 1965 comeback against North Melbourne cost him another four more matches. He booted a career high four goals on return against the Bulldogs but just two more for the season.

Set to play as ruck-rover or on a half-forward flank in the opening game of 1966 after impressing in the practice matches, Rattray broke a bone in his ankle in training shortly before the regular season started and was sidelined until Round 7. He played six matches in a row but then dropped out of the side and played just one more match in his career.

In 1967 he returned to Tasmania with North Launceston, and made a comeback for Penguin in 1971. Joined North Hobart in 1972.
