A former two time Scotch College 1st XVIII premiership player, the amateur Melville joined Melbourne from university and won the Best and Fairest in his first season. He played a further 20 the next year, and 15 in 1955 after missing five weeks with glandular fever. He had already had an attack of the same illness in 1954.
He was made vice-captain in his third year and played in two premierships before becoming an ordained Presbyterian minister at the end of 1956 and moving to London to take up a position with a church in Stepney. He was only 25 years old.
The club had already had to seek assurances from Melville before the 1955 season that his chosen career wouldn't interfere with his football, but once he moved to England he was lost to the game forever. While in London he played one game, for the Australian-New Zealand club.
He returned to Victoria in 1958 and trained with the Demons but made it clear that it was strictly training only and that he would not play senior football again.
