June 1871 match vs Albert Park

Saturday 17 June - Melbourne Ground
Crowd: 6000 to 7000

Melbourne 4
Albert Park 1 (half time 2-1)

Melbourne win by 3 goals

Goalkickers: Tom Hepburn 2, Austin Loughnan 1, Barker 1

Melbourne should have had the first goal in the opening minutes, but Loughnan missed from directly in front. Albert Park couldn't clear the ball and he made amends soon after. Albert Park had their best run of the day in response, sneaking a goal when a Melbourne defender didn't think the ball was going through the goals and failed to adequately clear it.

That was it for the visitors, Melbourne got the reply goal through Hepburn shortly after. Play was then stopped for a time while several players ran into the pavilion to remonstrate with spectators.

From many second half opportunities, the Reds only managed two more goals to win comfortably.

Notes
Weekly Times lists the crowd as 'hundreds' and suggests Melbourne scored five.
