Geelong win by six goals

Goalkickers: McGinis 1, Moysey 1, McCulloch 1

Both teams had gone through the early part of the season unbeaten but had suffered one defeat each going into the match, and fans came from around the state to see what was until that point the match of the season. Rain in the morning and intermittent showers during the game hurt the quality of the match, but though that should have given the home side's followers an advantage Geelong were by far the better side.

The first quarter was even, though Melbourne should have done better with the breeze. They then scored two goals early in the second to take the lead, but that was as good as it got and they didn't registered another major while Geelong stamped themselves as premiership favourites with a big win. A burst of four goals in five minutes gave them a match-winning lead. Geelong may have only had 18 shots that 'scored', but they had another 11 within range that failed to register either a goal or a behind. Melbourne, on the other hand, only had 14 chances in total.

Best were McGinis, Moysey and Christy. It was said that a 'patented football alarm clock' was used to mark the time of the quarters with success.

Notes
Some sources have Melbourne's quarter time score as 1.2
