July 1889 match vs South Melbourne

Saturday 27 July - MCG
Crowd: 600

Melbourne 0.1, 0.2, 2.4, 2.6
South Melbourne 2.4, 5.8, 8.10, 14.13

South Melbourne win by 12 goals

Goalkickers: McCann 1, Langridge 1

South were the overwhelming favourites, and they didn't disappoint as they destroyed their hapless opponents. Melbourne were overmatched from the start, and the whole game was a series of attacks on their goal.

The defenders were Melbourne's best players despite the score, but on the occasions where they cleared the ball out of the backline the centremen failed to take advantage.

Melbourne were better during the third quarter and scored a couple of goals, but South pulled away in the last term for a thumping victory.

Best were Hallett, Langridge, Sheahan
