Melbourne won the toss and played uphill in the first half, but with the wind in their favour. They were quickly in attack, but it took 20 minutes for Kneen to open the scoring. Loughnan added a second not long after. St Kilda had some opportunities but went to half time two goals down.

The second half was total domination by the Reds, adding three more goals. The last came from Towle dodging four or five players before scoring through an open goal. St Kilda never once crossed Melbourne's line with either a goal or point.

Best were Carr, Sillett and Forrester.
