After graduating from the Under 19s to make his senior debut in 1989, Howat spent the next three years as a bit-part player - spending time both back and forward during his career. He was delisted at the end of 1992.

When John Northey went to Richmond he selected Howat with pick 97 in the National Draft. He added another 45 games to his career, but after Northey left Punt Road Howat lasted just one season under Robert Walls before being axed. He was joint captain of the Tigers' 1997 Reserves premiership.

Coached Mitcham in the EFL in 1999 and 2000 but was replaced and joined Mordialloc as a player and assistant coach where he remained through 2002.
