Promoted from the Melbourne Juniors late in 1924, Davidson was a rover who played a key part in the 1926 premiership side, being amongst the best in both the Preliminary Final and Grand Final winning sides.

Linked to a coaching job in Albury in 1930, he remained with the Demons for three further seasons. Davidson retired in 1932 to take care of a sick wife and was cleared to Castlemaine the next year where he coached and won the league's best and fairest award. He remained with them through until the end of 1936. In 1935 he was the driver in a car crash where one of his players was killed.

In 1936 he rejoined Melbourne as a talent scout after returning to the city, and in the 1937 pre-season trained in the hope of making a comeback but didn't play another game. He instead became playing coach of Kew.
