Nicknamed "Charlie", Mackie was signed by the Fuschias after building a reputation playing for the Port Melbourne Railways side. Mackie himself was a wharfie, but the Railways knew a quality player when they saw one.

Debuting on a wing in 1913, Mackie held his place for the next five weeks but suffered a broken collarbone against Carlton in what would ultimately turn out to be his last game of VFL football. He returned to Port the next year, this time signing with their VFA side where he played 15 games over two seasons before enlisting in the army.

Mackie died on March 20, 1917 at Bapaume, France during World War I hostilities.
