The follower and goalsneak played seven seasons with St Kilda before walking out before 1909. He cited disappointment with the their play in 1908, and claimed that he had lost his job because the club had pressured his employer to give him a leave of absence to go on a trip to Tasmania. St Kilda rejected his allegations, refusing him a clearance. Cowell played two games for Melbourne early in the year until directed by the VFL to stop selecting him after they declared his claims about St Kilda were not credible. The issue was cleared before Round 9, and he played five more games for the club.

Cowell was expected to reappear in 1910 but did not play another game. In 1919 he was became coach of VFA side Camberwell.

Notes
Probably the Jim Cowell who coached Pakenham in 1914. Possibly the Cowell who was on Melbourne's list in 1914.
