A South Australian midfielder who rocketed to the top of draft calculations after breaking into a strong Sturt SANFL senior side in late 2009, Trengove played a starring role in their preliminary final victory with 29 touches and a vital match saving mark in the dying minutes. With the luxury of the first two picks in the draft care of the last priority selection of the pre-expansion era, the Demons were able to take both Trengove and fellow top recruit Tom Scully.

After earning a nomination in the Demons upset victory over Brisbane, Trengove finished fourth in the Rising Star voting, two places behind Scully. Despite controversially being outed for three matches for a sling tackle against Adelaide in Round 7, Trengove played every other match for the season and was one of his side's best midfielders. In stark contrast to his fellow draftee Scully, Trengove signed a mid-season contract extension and pledged his future to the club.

Before the 2012 season Trengove was named co-captain with Jack Grimes. At Round 1 it made him the youngest captain in VFL/AFL history. He played every game for the year, but in a failing Melbourne side he didn't live up to the standards set the year before despite winning plaudits from coach Mark Neeld for his leadership at a young age.

A foot injury in the 2013 pre-season hurt his campaign, and he was more successful with defensive duties during the season than as an attacking midfielder. After playing 20 games for the season he relinquished the captaincy at the end of 2013. Dropped after two games of the 2014 season scans after two games in the VFL revealed that Trengove had a fractured navicular bone in his foot. He was sidelined for the rest of the season.

During that year's trade period a swap along with Melbourne's 23rd pick for the 12th pick of Richmond was floated, and Trengove went as far as touring the Tigers' facilities before his medical with the club revealed a recurrence of the injury, leading to the trade being cancelled. He was unable to play for the entire 2015 season due to the injury.

Trengove returned for three games in 2016 and signed a one-year contract extension to keep him at the club until the end of 2017. After two further games he was delisted. Port Adelaide then signed him as a delisted free agent for 2018, where he played three further senior games before returning to Sturt.
