Promoted from the Seconds to the senior list at the start of 1938, Maher played 24 senior games and won a Seconds premiership before serving in the RAAF during World War II where he rose to the rank of flight-lieutenant.

Maher announced his retirement before the 1940 season, when he was scheduled to move to Sydney as part of his job with the aviation branch of the Meterological Bureau. He stayed in Victoria, training with two VFA clubs and returning to play the first game of the season. He asked for a clearance to Essendon but was denied and stayed for the rest of the season.

In January 1941 he was transferred to Canberra as part of his Air Force service, but after three years away from the league Maher returned for four games in 1944.
