Initially recruited from Grammar, the brother of Edward and uncle of the four Cordners of the 1940's, Harry played one game in 1903 before missing the next year. Returning for the 1905 season he played ten games, topped the club goalkicking and played for Victoria against New South Wales.

In 1906 he returned to University to continue his medical studies, and captained their football side to successful Metropolitan Football Association premierships that year and in 1907. When the side was promoted to the VFL in 1908 Cordner was their inaugural captain before moving to Western Australia after the 1909 season.

He was in Britain when World War I broke out and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He later served in France.
