William Henry "Harry" Bruce was a World War I veteran, having served in the 3rd Light Horse Signal Corp from 1915. He also served in World War II.

The rover played Seconds in 1920 before debuting the next year. He played in draws in his first two matches and appeared in seven games in his first year before dropping off the list.

Appeared in the Seconds again in early 1922, then joined VFA side Hawthorn during the season. He played there for three years.
