Recruited from the amateurs, where he had been a star full-forward, Watson was tried as a wing, centre and rover in his first season with the Demons. He was named as an emergency for both the Semi Final and Grand Final sides in his debut year.

Watson played just five matches in his second year after suffering two broken jaws. The dual sport star began the 1966 pre-season intending to play football but retired citing the game interfering with his studies. He was also in contention to tour South Africa with the Australian test cricket team, and he'd only just reversed his decision and returned to the Reserves when he was picked to play for Australia and gave the game away for good.

He lined up in five tests and two One Day Internationals for Australia between 1966 and 1972. He played first class cricket for Victoria from 1964/65 to 1970/71, for Western Australia from 1971/72 to 1974/75 and New South Wales in 1976/77.

In 1971/72 he played two tests against a World XI side, and suffered a serious injury in the second innings of the second match. Hit in the face by a Tony Greig ball he suffered a broken nose and a damaged artery that required hospitalisation and a transfusion of 20 litres of blood.
