Recruited from South Australia at the height of the depression, Margitich crossed to Victoria with a reputation as a big goalkicker. The previous season he had kicked 76 goals for South Adelaide despite them finishing last. Demon fans didn't have to wait long to see him deliver his best. After a three goal haul on debut, Margitich booted six in the round 2 victory over Geelong and seven against North Melbourne in round 4.

In Round 9 he ran riot against Essendon at the MCG, kicking 11 of his side's 17 goals in a 32 point win. That year he played for a VFL representative side against Subiaco.

He ended with 73 goals from 17 games, up to that point a record for the Demons. The next year he got 66 despite being held goalless for the first time in his career during the round 14 loss to Geelong at Corio.

In 1932 the side only won three games, but Margitich still managed 60 goals for the year. The side fell further in 1933, winning just three matches, but he still got 52 goals including 10 of 15 in the round 18 loss to Collingwood. The great Gordon Coventry was busy booting ten at the other end.

The side improved in 1934, winning 8 games, but Margitich was less prominent in front of goal kicking 16 goals in ten matches. It was the end of his VFL career. He travelled to New Zealand for business, and upon his return in early 1935 signalled that he was going to resume playing but didn't. He instead travelled to Western Australia and took over as coach of Swan Districts for the second half of the season after their coach resigned.

Margitich also played first grade cricket for the MCC.
