"Pompey" Elliott spent a year at the Redlegs before achieving his boyhood dream of joining his local side in 1900. He remained with the side until going west to play for North Fremantle in 1902.
Returning to Carlton the next year he played in the 1906 and 1908 premierships, missing the middle flag due to suspension. Midway through 1909 he was elevated from captain to playing coach when the incumbent retired and led his side to a losing Grand Final against South Melbourne.
He retired at the end of 1911 but was convinced to return the next year for Footscray in the VFA, playing in their 1912 premiership defeat.
Elliot enlised in the army in July 1915 and was wounded in action in 1916. He returned to Australia in 1919 and was discharged.
Elliott was the first Carlton player to rack up 200 games and was voted into their Hall of Fame in 1988.
