In a six year VFL career wingman Wiliams played just four games, three in two seasons with Carlton then four in three at Melbourne. In between his stints with the major clubs he played most of 1937 with amateur side Old Paradians after being denied a clearance to the Demons.

Initially recruited to play in the Seconds, Williams was upgraded to the seniors for played he last two weeks of 1938. He was in the squad for Round 1, 1939 after which he didn't play again until his last game in Round 1, 1941. He then joined the RAAF as a pilot and fought with distinction until the Japanese surrender.

A lawyer by trade, later in life he worked at Carlton in their financial department. His father had served as president of the Carlton Cricket Club. Elected as the ALP candidate for a Melbourne City council seat in 1941 he remained in the role through 1944.
