Rover and wingman recruited by the Tigers after playing with the South Mildura seniors at 14-years-old Cumming played in four VFL Under 19 premierships by the time he was 20 years old - captaining the side to victory in 1969. He also played in two Reserves flags and one senior premiership.

Cumming crossed from Richmond early in 1977 after seven seasons at Punt Road but played just one year with the Demons before moving to North Melbourne in 1978 in a swap for Tony May, then joined South Melbourne in 1979.

In 1980 he was player/coach of Wentworth in the Sunraysia League and was selected to play in that year's league representative side. He remained there until the end of 1982, then joined Mildura in 1983.
