Former Fitzroy player who crossed to the Redlegs in 1899, after spending the previous year with Rutherglen. He missed the 1900 premiership triumph when he didn't play a game after Round 17 that year, suspended for the rest of the year after being reported for striking. When he'd been booked for 'umpire jostling' in Round 9, 1900, Moriarty became the first Melbourne player to face the VFL tribunal.
Moriarty was killed by a freight train near Jolimont Station on 26 August 1903. Authorities determined from the position of the body that he had committed suicide, but Melbourne secretary Amos Norcott gave evidence at the inquest that it may have been due to an epileptic seizure. Norcott testified that Moriarty had suffered two seizures on the club's recent trip to Bairnsdale. The jury returned an open verdict on the death, but the coroner gave weight to the epileptic fit theory.
Before his death he had been employed as a groundsman at the MCG.
