Cleared to University in 1914 and played one game with them but his career was cut short by the First World War. Enlisted in the army in September 1915 but was sent home after all three of his brothers were killed in action on the Western Front.

After the war he worked as a warehouseman and was the managing director of his own company Steele and Co. In 1938 he was elected to the Melbourne Chamber Commerce, but lost his life in 1939 after he and his chauffeur were involved in a boating capsize in Port Phillip Bay. They had left Mornington on the boat to farewell Steele's niece who was sailing to Singapore. His body was found a few days later.
