Originally drafted by North Melbourne with the 41st selection of the 2015 Draft, Wagner played with the Kangaroos for two seasons. After being delisted he joined the Casey Demons, playing alongside Melbourne-listed brother Josh. After two seasons with Casey he signed with Melbourne, taking advantage of a new rule that allowed clubs to directly sign previously delisted AFL players as rookies.
His first season with Melbourne featured more games combined than his two at North, playing 11 times and being a semi-regular fixture as a midfield/forward. He wasn't selected for any games in 2020 and was delisted at the end of the season. After playing at Port Melbourne in 2022 he was drafted by Fremantle, debuting with them in early 2023.
